Gingivitis Treatment

Kavala Graha (Oil Pulling): Kavala Graha is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing a tablespoon of medicated oil (such as sesame oil or coconut oil) or a herbal decoction (kashaya) in the mouth for a specific duration, typically 5 to 20 minutes. The oil or kashaya is swished around the mouth and between the teeth, working as a natural mouthwash. The therapy is believed to have numerous benefits, including reducing inflammation, pain, and infection in the gums. It can also help increase blood circulation in the oral tissues, which promotes healing and strengthens the teeth and gums.



  1. Gandusha (Oil Pulling with Retention): Gandusha is similar to Kavala Graha, but instead of swishing the oil or kashaya, it involves holding the liquid in the mouth for a longer duration, usually 3 to 5 minutes. This therapy allows the medicinal properties of the oil or kashaya to penetrate deeper into the oral tissues, thereby providing additional benefits in reducing pain and inflammation and strengthening the gums. Gandusha can also help in Danta Chalana, which means strengthening the teeth and gums.

Both Kavala Graha and Gandusha are effective practices for oral hygiene and can be used to support the management of gingivitis. The swishing or retention of the medicated oil or kashaya helps remove harmful bacteria and toxins from the mouth, which contributes to better oral health. These therapies can be performed daily or as advised by an Ayurvedic practitioner, and they can complement regular dental care routines.



In addition to these Panchakarma therapies, Ayurveda may recommend other measures for managing gingivitis:


  1. Herbal Mouthwashes: Using herbal mouthwashes containing antimicrobial herbs like neem (Azadirachta indica) or triphala (a combination of three fruits) can help maintain oral hygiene and reduce gingival inflammation.

  2. Herbal Toothpaste: Using toothpaste containing natural ingredients like neem, clove, or cinnamon can promote gum health and prevent bacterial growth.

  3. Dietary Recommendations: Consuming a diet that is gentle on the gums and rich in vitamin C and antioxidants can be helpful. Avoiding excessively hot, spicy, or acidic foods may also be advised.

  4. Practicing Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and tongue cleaning are essential components of oral care that should not be neglected.
